Lisabeth Saunders-Medlock operates Results Consulting and has
been in operation for seven years. Her areas of expertise include
outcomes evaluation, strategic planning, facilitation, and program
development. We asked her a few questions to find out more about
what it takes to be a successful consultant.
1.) What is your favorite
aspect of working with nonprofits?
The people that work in non-profits
have a great passion for
their work and commitment to their
cause. They are invested
in doing what is best for the people they serve.
When you work with nonprofits
you know that the work you
do is going to ultimately
change people’s
lives in a positive way and impact issues that are important to
you.
2.) How do you keep yourself or your organization informed about
the latest developments in your field of expertise?
I scan the Internet on a
regular basis, reading articles and looking
at the work other consultants
are doing. The best way to continually learn and improve
is to
assess the impact of your services
and use the feedback of the
organizations with which you work. When things I am doing
don’t
work, I modify them.
3.) What is the most valuable lesson you have learned since becoming
a consultant?
The most valuable lesson
I have learned is that you have to value what people know,
what they
bring to the table, and respect
it. Acting like “the
expert” will not win you any friends or help you gain respect. I have
also had to learn patience because the process of change takes time.
